Welcome back to the Two Navy Guys Debrief, the (mostly) weekly forum where we look at a national security issue and how we have explored that topic in our fiction.
By the way, if you’re not already a subscriber to the Two Navy Guys Debrief, here’s your chance!
No column this week. Instead, we bring you an unsubtle and completely self-serving reminder that Christmas is coming and the best gift of all is the gift of imagination.
Really, is there a better way to say I appreciate you than with a book?
Our own Command and Control series makes a wonderful gift in print, ebook, or audio, of course. In addition to the normal sales channels, you can now buy our books in print direct from Severn River Publishing.
As long-time readers know, we very occasionally feature other authors that we know and whose work we admire. Here’s a recommendation each from JR and David for two authors you might want to add to your reading list.
David recommends CIA veteran-turned-author Carmen Amato. Drawing on her 30-year career in the intelligence community, Carmen writes the Detective Emilia Cruz mystery series about the first female police detective in Acapulco, Mexico. That’s not all she writes. If you have a hankering for historical fiction, check out the fabulous Galliano Club series set in 1920s Prohibition Era and inspired by her grandfather’s tales of his time as Deputy Sheriff in Oneida County, New York.
History buff JR recommends author Glenn Dyer and his World War Two espionage thriller series featuring OSS agent Conor Thorn. JR reports that Agent Thorn cuts a mean swath through the Third Reich. The novels are well researched, with intricate storylines woven into real world operations. Even better, the fourth book in the series, Trust No One, launches on December 11th, just in time for the holiday season.
On his radio show, National Security This Week, JR steps back from the realpolitik of national security topics to talk about…wait for it…BOOKS. Noted authors JJ Harrigan, David McCloskey, and the other half of the Two Navy Guys writing team join JR to discuss the intersection of national security thriller novels and actual national security challenges and opportunities. JJ Harrigan is a former state department Foreign Service Officer and political science professor, and David McCloskey is a former CIA intelligence analyst and consultant.
Be happy. Stay healthy. Read (or listen to) a book.
As always, thanks for being a supporter –
