About those redactions in your service record...
The Two Navy Guys have a new project. We invite you to check it out.
We’re breaking our normal Sunday post routine to let you know about a new Two Navy Guys project.
By the way, if you’re not already a subscriber to the free Two Navy Guys Debrief, here’s your chance!
If you’re reading this, it’s a good bet that you love thriller novels. (Really, what’s not to like?)
But what about those moments when you don’t have the time or headspace to read an entire novel? What if you just want to try out a new author without investing in a 400-page book?
The answer, of course, is a short story.
If you’re a sci-fi reader, you have a lot of short-form options: Clarkesworld, Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine, to name two. If you love mysteries, you could seek out Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine.
But thrillers? High-action, adventure stories?
Nada. Zip. Nil. As far as we know, there are NO magazines dedicated to thrillers.
Author Matt Buchman has decided to change that. He is producing a quarterly magazine dedicated to the genre that we both know and love called Thrill Ride - The Magazine.
This new venture launches TODAY with a Kickstarter that we hope you will check out.
The four issues for this year are already set. Matt invited thirty authors to get the fifty original stories he needed for the first four issues of the magazine.
For readers of the Two Navy Guys novels, there’s a special treat. The inaugural issue of Thrill Ride has an origin story about Harrison Kohl.
Introduced in Command and Control as a secondary character, Harrison has gone on to become a major presence in the series. Astute readers, such as yourselves, might recall that Harrison has a checkered past. As Don notes when we first meet Mr. Kohl:
Of all the people in the room, Harrison was the closest peer for Don. They were about the same age and level of experience, except that Don was a deputy director and Harrison was currently serving as a senior analyst.
Don had seen the redactions in Harrison’s CIA service record and suspected that was probably the reason why he had not moved up the career ladder. He also knew that Harrison seemed perfectly content with his level of career advancement.
What is this mysterious redaction? It follows Harrison throughout the series, but we never tell you what Harrison did that was so egregious that it permanently derailed his career.
Until now.
“The Asset,” available only in the inaugural issue of Thrill Ride - The Magazine, is the untold story of Harrison Kohl.
We hope you will consider backing this Kickstarter and making short-form thriller history.
Be happy. Stay healthy. Read (or listen to) a book.
As always, thanks for being a supporter –
David & JR, AKA the Two Navy Guys
I just opened your newsletter and saw the Kickstarter, and pledged of course! I’m so excited about this new project by Matt Buchanan! I wish him and you all the best! I pray this Kickstarter will be the launch and a continuation of the thriller magazine. Good luck, Peeps! Go for it! Happy weekend!
Love and Light.
